We Sit Together: Utopian Benches from the Shakers to the Separatists of Zoar, by Francis Cape

Whether for companionship, religious congress, protest, seating, or comfort, sitting communally remains one of the most powerful and prevalent of human social activities. This simple act held special significance in numerous utopian communities that emerged in nineteenth-century America, and was given physical presence in the form of a variety of styles of wooden benches. Fascinated by these expressions of harmony and equality, renowned British artist Francis Cape crafted meticulous recreations and measured drawings of remaining examples. Book available this Spring.

“I arranged a complete set of Letraset Tria Pantone markers in the order of the color spectrum and left them for one month, resting on their nibs, on a stack of five hundred SRA1 sheets of 70 gsm uncoated white paper. The numbering and value of each sheet corresponds to its position within the stack. The final sheet the ink reached (out of the stack of five hundred) was numbered 1/73 and valued at one pound; the one above it was numbered 2/73 and valued at two pounds; and so on. The top sheet (the sheet the pens rested on directly) was numbered 73/73 and valued at seventy-three pounds.” —Daniel Eatock

Lucy + Jorge Orta
70 x 7: The Meal—Royal Limoges Plates, 2000–8

Food–Water–Life: Lucy + Jorge Orta is the first comprehensive exhibition of work by the French wife-husband collaborative duo in the United States. Better known in Europe than in the U.S. and best known as sculptors, the Ortas’ deeply engaging and witty assemblage works draw from an eclectic array of mass-produced materials like transport vehicles, survival gear, vintage Red Cross boxes, and everyday found objects, which are conjoined and combined with their custom fabric wearables, water bottles, food preserves, and ceramic plates.

The accompanying publication Lucy + Jorge Orta: Food, Water, Life was published by PAPress in 2011.
